Use your New Year's Resolutions as a chance to be memorable

A few years ago my New Year’s resolution was to fly in a private jet.

I went to a party my friend’s friend was throwing, and when the typical “what’s your resolution?” question came around, people threw out “eat healthy” and “workout” and I said “I wanna fly in a PJ this year, just once, somehow get an invite”

It was great. It led to a bunch of follow-up questions from people, and at the bar later that night my friends and I had a great intro question to ask people “have you ever flown private before?”

It led to us starting new conversations with people, joking about CEOs that fly on private planes, and even messaging a few of them on LinkedIn to ask if we could get an invite on the PJ.

Was it my actual resolution for that year? No! But I’m a big fan of using “New Year’s Resolutions” as a way to be funny, outrageous, and memorable at a party. Because here’s the thing about resolutions - they’re the same: working out, eating healthy, who cares.

But if you go to a New Year’s Eve party, someone asks what your resolution is, and you say “I want to fly in a private jet” (or any of the other examples I’m about to share) it will have an incredible effect.

So without further adieu, here are some unique and cool New Year’s Resolutions to have / spark a conversation when you go out this year:

1. I’m finding my signature drink this year

Another reason I love NYE is because it’s a holiday centered around Champagne and Prosecco - which is my signature drink. And not to be up my own ass, but everyone who knows me, knows that I love Prosecco.

I think it’s important that everyone has a signature drink past the age of 21.

This brands you. This makes it easy for people to order you a drink before you get to the bar. This makes it easy for guys to plan dates to take you out on. This cements you into peoples brains so that when they see your signature drink on the menu they think of you.

So make your NYE resolution about finding a signature drink. This is also great because when people ask you what your resolution is, you tell them it’s this, and it’s a conversation starter. Ask them what their signature drink is. Hear about drinks you haven’t heard of before. Invite them to a cocktail bar next week in the name of helping your resolution and get completely faced off of a variety of new cocktails!

2. I want to [have a successful interaction] with [a C-list celebrity]

Think of a C-list celebrity that you would want to interact with. Maybe they’re a popular YouTuber, or a reality TV show star. Then make your resolution all about that person.

I want Carol Baskin from Tiger King to respond to a DM of mine on Instagram.

That’s a good resolution. It’s funny, it’s iconic, and it’s specific enough to make people remember it.

The thing I love about setting resolutions like this, is that it makes other people want to help. When my resolution last year was flying in a private jet, I would tell people about it, and ask if they knew of a way I could make that happen. Suddenly everyone was telling me about friends of theirs that flew on jets, or people they could introduce me to.

I guarantee if you say something like, “My New Year’s resolution is to talk to Carrot Top online” you will have an engaged audience. Follow up your resolution with things like, “do you know anyone in comedy?” or “have you ever talked with a celebrity online?” and soon you’ll have a group of people focused on you (hello, attention) and helping you reach your goal. And boom, now you just got the party started with a great conversation starter.

3. I want to go viral on [platform]

I always think this is a fun thing to have as a resolution. My COVID quarantine goal was to go viral on TikTok (baby, I did it! One of my TikToks got over 1.7 million views) and telling people about that goal of mine was always a fun experience.

So tell people very seriously that you want to make a meme about Barron Trump that goes viral. Tell them that you want to capture the perfect cat video and have it get over 1 million views. Proudly say that you want to start a viral campaign to dethrone the World Record Egg.

The thing is - this is entirely possible. Remember the movement to storm Area 51? You could be that next person! So get creative with it! I think this is a fun one.

4. I want to find the best [food item] in [your city]

This is a great resolution for deepening those second-hand friendships you have. You know, your acquaintances that you’re not super close with or your friend’s friend that you think is super cool but you’ve never hung out with one-on-one.

Tell people that you want to find the best chocolate chip cookie in New York, or the best avocado toast in Chicago or something like that. You’ll soon get suggestions for places. Opportunities to go there with those second-hand friends. Excuses that you didn’t have before to invite people out with you. Chances to meet new people.

So yes, basically I’m just suggesting that you use your New Year’s Resolution as a conversation (and hangout) starter - but I stand by this, resolutions are a good chance to do this.

5. I want to be able to rap all of “What’s Your Fantasy” by Ludacris

This was my sister’s resolution one year, and this is a fantastic resolution. Very iconic, very memorable.

For what it’s worth, she tried to do this and came close but didn’t succeed. She even messaged Ludacris on Instagram (hello, #2) for advice. I think she said something to him like, “Have you ever done this live? It’s really hard. What parts do you pause at to breathe?” and did not get a response. Sad!

This is a resolution ripe with so many memorable moments. Tell everyone on NYE that this is your goal. Then in March throw a party called “let’s get drunk and see if I can rap my resolution” and invite everyone that you told your resolution to. Now you are partying! And rapping!

See, isn’t this so much better than “work out 3x a week” as a resolution?

I hope these five examples give you some ideas for brainstorming! I always like having my resolution before NYE parties because that’s usually the time you get asked most about resolutions.

So let me know what your resolutions are for 2023 and also…if you know anyone with access to a private jet…please let me know!

Until the next one,
S
