6 Ways to Pregame Your Mood: When you'd rather stay in than party

I want to first, preemptively recognize that I know this is very much a first world problem. But like most first world problems, they’re pretty relatable, and I thought I would write a blog post to offer my wisdom on the topic.

We’ve all had moments where we promised to go to a party, or attend an event, or show up for a first date, and while we’re excited at the time of commitment, the actual day rolls around and for whatever we reason we just aren’t feeling it.

You could of course, back out (and sometimes it feels so deliciously right to do that), but sometimes all you need is the right step of solutions to change your mood from fuck this to fuck yes. It happened to me just a few weeks ago.

“I don’t want to go out,” I had groaned to my roommate. It was the morning of Santa Con, New York City’s yearly holiday booze-fest, where thousands of costumed Santa’s roam bars in the East Village to drink, vomit, and get into fist fights in the street.

A year ago, I was incredibly excited to one day experience this.

But this morning I woke up wanting to spend all day Saturday inside, playing video games, and fully reveling in comfortable laziness.

“I know, I don’t blame you,” my roommate laughed, folding her laundry. “It’s freezing outside, and the lines are super long, and then when you get inside it’s so crowded you can barely get a drink.”

“Why are you saying this?” I mumbled. “I have to go! My friends are coming over in an hour to pre-game, and I always said I would do Santa Con.”

I sat there with a frown and a Santa hat on and glumly took a long sip of my homemade cocktail.

“Come out with me,” I begged my roommate.

“Not a chance.”

I shot her a glare and finished my drink.

“Fine. I’ll just keep drinking until I’m in the mood to do this.”

1. Put on the right playlist. The right playlist.

The right playlist for this is a mix between a party playlist, and a workout playlist. Luckily for you, I’ve created the perfect one called “Vandal Songs” and you can view it below.

Even if you normally listen to Broadway showtunes, or Throwback 90’s songs, trust me, listen to this mix in the background for 15 minutes and you’ll feel alive and ready to be out in the world.

2. Play a drinking game to these specific shows

Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 (stupid name, but incredible show) and Sex and the City. Only those two shows. If you love them, lucky you. If you haven’t watched them, even luckier! And if you don’t like them, well that’s okay, but trust in me that they will make you excited to go out.

Basically any show set in New York City reminds you that there is a world out there to be lived in, baby! And the characters in these shows have so much confidence and charisma that it will wear off on you in even one episode.

3. Cocaine

Haha, I’m just kidding. I mean, this absolutely would work, but I’m not about to push cocaine on my blog.

4. Spend 10 extra minutes on your appearance

Even if you’re reading this, dreading going out, and already in full glam, get back in there and spend another 10 minutes on how you look. It could mean painting your nails, a spritz of perfume, trimming your pubic hair, whatever the fuck you want!

Look at yourself from head to toe and think of what you can spend 10 minutes on improving. After you do that, you’ll mentally be in an area of “I have to go out and have people look at me tonight because I spent serious god damn time on my appearance”. It’s all about tricking the brain.

5. Watch these YouTube videos

I have a little weird secret where if I’m not in the mood to workout, I’ll watch this video of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie beating the shit out of each other. I don’t know if it’s the endorphin rush, their athletic ability, or maybe just my bisexual urges just kicking into high gear, but it makes me amped to workout and before the video finishes I’ll have my running shoes on.

There are a few specific party scenes on YouTube that make me want to take a tequila shot and dance on top of a table, and I’m going to share them here in the hopes that it pumps you up as well:

This 12 minute Skins supercut will definitely make you want to go out.

This clip from Neighbors.

And this one from 21 Jump Street.

6. Set an end goal for yourself

So many times I have pre-gamed unenthusiastically with friends, and declared an end goal for myself.

“I’m leaving after I talk to 3 people at this party!”

“I’ll come out to the first bar stop, but I’m going home after that!”

“I’m coming because I want to see if that hot girl is there, but if she isn’t there then I’m leaving!”

It’s like a little mental compromise to myself. 90% of the time, I end up staying and having a fab night, because getting yourself there is truly the hardest part.

But if you get there, reach your end goal, and you’re still miserable? Fucking come home, get naked, and binge Chopped episodes in your bed. Still a hell of a night, and you can feel good knowing that you put yourself out there.

So the next time you’re mixing your whiskey with weariness, try some of these options before you head out for the night. They might pep up your mood, and actually have you looking forward to a night out!

As always,
